DJ Lesson #7 + DJ Needles + Jangula at Lit Lounge

{$106.00/$663.88}

How do normal citizens become fans of your band? For an indi band back

in the pre-napster era, word of mouth, flyers, and stickers were pretty much the

only method to get your music out. The rate of accurate information transaction

were not perfect. Some will forget the name of the band, some will forget the name

of the venue your band is playing, some will simply forget the TIME you are

playing. This transaction is crucial for those fans who aren’t your friends, your

first true fans.

^

Jangula is a band I heard through word of mouth. If I haven’t known the drummer,

I wouldn’t been able to catch them live yesterday.

I had one big problem with this band. Their internet present was sloppy. Check

out their myspace. The picture is not put up right, texts are all over the place, and

the background is a plain white color background. I can’t really tell from one show

how serious they are with their musical career, but the impression I get from

myspace is very unprofessional. Most bands list their tour dates on myspace.

Jangula does not even have that.

^

The reason I stress the internet present is because our generation of music listeners

no longer rely on flyers and stickers to get information about a band. All the

information we need should be on the internet. This is what we are used to

and what fans are used to. The better you understand how your fans

communicate, the easier it will be for fans to understand you.

All Point West Tickets + Ferry Ride

{$260.00/$557.88}

IMG_0452Music is always good. But a music festival requires a little bit extra to fully enjoy it.

An outdoor concert for 8 hours is physically challenging. Especially if you like to

dance, jump, skank, and mosh. So here are my tips to fully enjoy a music

festival at the worst conditions.

^

1. Know your limit

Most festivals go on at least for 3 days in a row. Going to all three of them requires a

great amount of stamina and determination. Before you buy the tickets, you should

ask yourself this question, can I go to all 3 days? If the answer is yes, you are a beast.

But for the most of us, a concert a week is all we can handle. Think about your concert

going past, and determine if you have what it takes to fully rock out.

^

2. Be prepared

The weather is always a bitch. I hope your festival experiences were sunny. But most

festivals are in the summer. In the summer, it rains a lot. Wear an outfit not to impress,

but to rock out. I was really surprised at All Points West. A lot of high heels were

walking around. Put on some tennis shoes, get a poncho, be comfortable with what

you are wearing.

^

3. Research

You probably heard about 5 to 8 bands within the lineup. But when there is 40 bands

playing, is 5 to 8 bands enough to fully enjoy the festival? Its hard to become a

die-hard fan within a week. But listening to the music of bands performing in the

festival will increase your festival experience. You need to learn what type of music

other bands play, listen to their most successful songs, and then engage at the festival.

A festival is a great opportunity to expand your musical knowledge and

taste.

^

4. Schedule ahead

There were 3 stages at All Points West, and there was a fix schedule for every show.

You need to schedule which shows you are going before you arrive at the festival. In a

perfect world, your bands will be playing one after another. However, this is not true

in reality. Your bands might have an overlapping schedule. You also might wanna be

at the front for a superstar. If this is so, you need to understand that you aren’t the

only one trying to be at the front. You might need to forget about a band you like, just

to get in front of the crowd. The best time to get ahead of the crowd is when they are

setting up. Make a solid schedule and stick to it.

^

5. Game plan

Every band has a unique color. And there are ways to maximize your experience. For

example, Gogol Bordello is a gypsy-punk band. The way you fully enjoy this is by

moshing and skanking. MSTRKRFT is a electronic and dancing might be the way to go.

On the other side of rock out, there is Neko Case. Very sentimental soft rock is not a

typical song to go Ape-Shit. You might wanna have a beach towel to sit on and simply

enjoy the music peacefully. Imagine yourself how you are going to have fun

when a band is playing.

^

6. Be determined

You can do all the 5 things I told you, but you still could get lazy and not stick to the

plan. There is no short cut for this. Grow some balls and just do it!

^

I would like to thank Flying Lotus, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Peanut Butter Wolf, Jay-Z,

MSTRKRFT, Arctic Monkeys, Gogol Bordello, Neko Case, Crystal Castle, and

Ting Tings for a wonderful festival.

I would like to apologize to The Knux, Vampire Weekend, and MGMT for missing

their show.

I grew up listening to Offspring, Green Day, Rancid, and etc. But I never knew how all of this PUNK movement started. This is why I decided to buy this book.

Please Kill Me (the uncensored oral history of Punk)

{$9.92/$194.08}

IMG_0352Overall, I’m disappointed in PUNK. But I’m satisfied. The PUNK I know is all about

giving the finger to the BIG MAN. You know you can’t beat the BIG MAN, but you

want to do something about those pigs who rip you off. So that started PUNK! I hate

how you are doing things, and I know anything I do won’t change a thing, but this is

how I feel and the only way I know how to express my anger at you.

^

The musicians who first started this sort of movement, The Velvet Underground, was

well tutored by the famous Andy Warhol. After the first generation of pioneers, things

just got bad. Punk stars became junkies and useless. The movement started to be an

act of self destruction. England saw this act of self destruction and magnified this to a

new level of Chaos, and it died.

^

Danny Fields: “…this punk thing wasn’t viable. That they were meant to self-destruct

and so what’s the point in investing in any of them? Why build an audience for the

Ramones or the Pistols or the Clash? Why institutionalize them if they’re just

going to be destroyed, if it’s their nature to destroy others and to destroy

themselves?”

Legs McNeil: “Now that it was here, I didn’t want any part of it. Overnight, punk had

become as stupid as everything else. Punk wasn’t ours anymore. It had become

everything we hated.”

^

POWER ANGER DIY were the things good about PUNK. Let’s leave it at that.
